Unfortunately, there is no serial number lookup or reference chart, but luckily there are internet sleuths and firearm fanatics interested enough to help narrow things down. At the change to steel, the safety positions were also painted to indicate safe or fire. People use this information as a way to identify when their Stoeger Luger was made. If you are not sure of the composition of your frame try putting a magnet on it. If it sticks it was produced sometime after 1980.
There is no serial numbers list for dating the .22 cal. Stoeger Luger, but this information can help to eliminate the years it wasn't produced. The .22 cal. Stoeger Luger was introduced in 1969 and was discontinued in 1985. When production began, an aluminum receiver was used. Beginning in 1980 a production change using a steel receiver began. So, if a magnet doesn't stick to the receiver, the pistol is 1969-1979 production, if it does, it is 1980-1985 production.

FWIW..The 1923 Stoeger Commercialm Luger was the one that Stoeger used to secure the US patent and the name "Luger"...luger is a uniquely American name. These were imported with barrels from 3 1/2" to 24" and they had a stock lug on the lower end of the backstrap..At one time the NFA and GCA 68 required that this feature be removed or the gun be proccessed as a short barreled rifle or turned in....there are number of pistols in the marketplace(besides this one) that have had the lug ground off.. The chamber area of the barrel may be marked with an American Eagle...some are blank. The right side of the frame should bear the export mark and A.F. Stoeger Inc., New York. You will find some examples with the safety and extractor marked in English..other in German. Some will be marked with the US patent info. The production of the 1923 was said to be less than a thousand with a serial number of 1 to 5 digits without a letter suffix. Those examples of the Model 1923 with barrels in excess of 6" should be professionally appraised...for shorter guns values are: Excellent in excess of $5000 VG=$400....Good=$1800....Fair=$1000 and Poor =$700 at a minimum, examples with barrels longer than 8" up the value by 25%....and be warned that there almost as many fakes out there as there are real ones...this is one of the most forged firearms in history due to the wide range of values...and..i never met a Luger owner...one that has a war bring back that didn't think they had the worlds most sort after firearm..hence the most valueable...sadly...most example of this widely made firearm by at least 7 different German makers with many more made under license in other countries national arsenals...The most valuable USA version is the Abercrombie& Fitch 100 wwhich is a swiss made Luger a prime example will cost you in excess of $15,000 Again..counterfeits abound of this version..have any example professionally appraised.......buying or selling...You can find a dozen pages or so on Lugers in The Standard Catalog of Firearms
I have aquired one of these Stoeger beauties with a serial number of 13xx. I would assume this is a first year production? Does anyone have a set of the round toggle grips available for sale, since Numrich is currently sold out? The early ones were made of some sort of bakelite material and mine are disintigrating. 2ff7e9595c
